Evil Does Not Exist (12A)

Evil Does Not Exist

Aku Wa Sonzai Shinai

This is the new feature – an eco parable - from the director of ‘Drive My Car’, which won the 2021 Best Foreign Film Bafta and Oscar.

Takumi (Hitoshi Omika) and his daughter Hana (Rio Nishikawa) live in Mizubiki Village, close to Tokyo. Like generations before them, they live a modest life according to the cycles and order of nature. One day, the village inhabitants become aware of a plan to build a glamping site near Takumi's house, offering city residents a comfortable “escape” to nature. When two company representatives from Tokyo arrive in the village to hold a meeting, it becomes clear that the project will have a negative impact on the local water supply, causing unrest. The agency's mismatched intentions endanger both the ecological balance of the nature plateau and their way of life, with an aftermath that affects Takumi's life deeply. This ecological parable stands on the battle lines between modern civilization and the natural world, offering a perspective that's as quietly measured as it is entrancing. (Subtitles)

Close Your Eyes (12A)

Close Your Eyes

Cerrar Los Ojos

A near-masterpiece for director Víctor Erice, this film ends his long gap between films with a moving meditation on memory, identity and cinema itself.

A famous Spanish actor, Julio Arenas, disappears during the filming of a movie. Although his body is never found, the police conclude that he has suffered an accident at the edge of a cliff. Many years later, the mystery is brought up once more by a TV program that tries to evoke the actor, offering as a scoop, images of the last scenes in which he participated, shot by his close friend, director Miguel Garay (Manolo Solo). This is Erice’s first feature in 31 years - and only his fourth overall - arriving as something between a desert oasis and a mirage: a shimmery, nourishing culmination of ideas and ellipses in a career so elusive as to have taken on a mythic quality, to the point that his latest feels almost dreamed into being. Nominated for an amazing 11 Goya Awards – the Spanish film industry’s highest accolade. (Subtitles)

Poor Things (18)

Poor Things

Yorgos Lanthimos has created an incredible tale of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.

Under Baxter's (Willem Dafoe) protection, Bella (Emma Stone in a career defining performance) is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. ‘Poor Things’ is an awe-striking visual feast that satisfies the eyes, tantalizes the loins, and feeds the soul. Both incredibly funny and disturbing, sometimes in the same beat, it will surely be knocking on the door of awards voters in a host of categories. Lanthimos (‘Dogtooth’, ‘Killing of a Sacred Dear’, The Favourite’) continues to surprise and astound with every film. (Some subtitles)
