Alcarràs (15)

Alcarràs

The advent of modern technology threatens to deracinate a traditional Catalan farming family from their rural home, long held traditions and livelihood.

Winner of the Gold Bear at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival, Alcarràs follows the trials and tribulations of a rural Catalan farming family. Quimet is a middle-aged farmer who lives with his family in a rambling rented house, surrounded by peach trees which he harvests back-breakingly by hand. The supermarkets are starting to offer insultingly low prices for his produce and he faces eviction as his landowners decide to replace the trees with solar panels. We are plunged into the centre of his anxiety as he faces an abrupt end to all he holds dear. While the subtext of the advent of the modern into the traditional comes in and out of view throughout the film, this is also a sun-dappled, poignant and perceptive family drama. (Subtitles)
