Histories and Counter Histories of French Cinema
As two of Jean Gabin’s greatest films screen in this year’s French Film Festival (see below), this talk will look back at his near half century of film work.
This talk will present the life and times of the French film actor, offering an opportunity to admire Gabin's amazing work with Renoir and Carné, showing how he became a symbol of France. It will however also excavate a 'counter-history' of Gabin by focussing on his less well-known work for UK audiences in films such as ‘Un Singe en Hiver’. Our host will be Professor Hugo Frey, author of several books on French cinema and culture, including his recent co-authored, ‘The Look of the1960s’.
