We are delighted to bring you the 2026 Cannes Palme d’Or winner, a drama about an immigrant Romanian family living in Norway which is subject to a judicial investigation and local scrutiny.
The Gheorghius, a devout couple of Romanian and Norwegian heritage (Mihai, played by Sebastian Stan and Lisbet, played by Renate Reinsve) resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbours, the Halbergs (Lisa Carlehed and Markus Scarth Tønseth). Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu (Vanessa Ceban) shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents would have anything to do with it. This film is brim-full with class: both leads were recent Oscar nominees – Stan for ‘The Apprentice’ and Reinsve for ‘Sentimental Value’ – while you may remember director Cristian Mungiu for his brilliant 2007 Palme d’Or winner ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’ cementing him as a defining figure of the Romanian New Wave.
