An ambitious defense lawyer expertly represents her clients, including those who are accused of sexual assault. However, she finds out that the law does not provide justice after being herself attacked by a coworker.
A young, ambitious trial lawyer (Cynthia Erivo) brilliantly navigates the ruthless London court system where she is unmatched in her defense of the accused, including men charged with sexual assault. Just as her career is taking off, a life-altering event forces her to reckon with her belief in the judicial system that was once the core of her identity. Erivo delivers a brilliant charismatic performance as this complicated character, effectively conveying the thrill of having power and then the trauma of losing it entirely. Unlike Suzie Miller’s one-woman West End play of the same name starring Jodie Comer which recounted the events, this is an ensemble film which dramatises them, with an ensemble cast which includes ‘De Gaule’’s Simon Russell Beale.
