La Haine (15)

La Haine

Hate

December’s Film Club screening ties in to the French Film Festival, with this pivotal and vital film in French cinematic history, following 24 hours in the lives of three young men in the French suburbs.

When a young Arab is arrested and beaten unconscious by police, a riot erupts in the notoriously violent suburbs outside of Paris. Three of the victim's peers, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Said (Said Taghmaoui) and Hubert (Hubert Koundé), wander aimlessly about their home turf in the aftermath of the violence as they try to come to grips with their outrage over the brutal incident. After one of the men finds a police officer's discarded weapon, their night seems poised to take a bleak turn. The striking black-and-white visuals strips away all distractions, giving the environment a stark yet poetic atmosphere. Hard-hitting and breathtakingly effective, ‘La Haine’ reveals an uncompromising look at the long-festering social and economic divisions that affected 1990s Paris and is still apparent in some forms today.
