Onwards and Sideways

A story of two people with lots in common - a great sense of humour, a love of dance and they both have Parkinson's.

Tony Evans (Rhys Ifans) is deputy head of a primary school. Emma Dretzin (Laura Linney) is a musician, composer and single mother of two daughters. Neither knows the other. Until a startling encounter changes the course of their lives. On the same morning, these two are simultaneously confronted with a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. This film is their story - a friendship which unfolds unexpectedly. A story of humour and emotion, of challenge and bravado, of music and dance - transcending the assumptions of a little understood condition, and triumphing over the odds to find joy, release and love. Also featuring Rory Kinnear and Monica Dolan, director John Madden (‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘Operation Mincemeat’) never allows Parkinson’s Disease to take over his dramedy. His leads, alongside writer (and extra in this film) Paul Mayhew-Archer’s first-hand perspective - he wrote the original autobiography on which this film is based – ensure the film breathes with warmth and hope.
