From the director of 2018’s brilliant ‘Burning’ comes a story of four strangers whose paths cross by chance, leading to complex emotional entanglements that challenge their existing relationships.
Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) are a deeply unhappy married couple from a blue-collar background with a young son. They meet a fashionable and wealthy couple - film director Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong) and her rich hedge fund trader husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung) - who are making a documentary about the injustice of the way factory workers are treated. Shrewd Ye-ji senses that this unhappy working-class couple could make a great story, and with casual ruthlessness sets out to befriend Mi-ok, inviting them on double-dates and for a vacation trip to their family home complete with private beach. The two couples soon begin to covet each other’s lives in this this is unmistakable Lee Chang-dong film, its aching humanism reflecting the co-existence of despair and hope. (Subtitles)
