In this very funny romantic, yet outrageous, fairytale, an ostracized fisherwoman commissions the local basket weaver to create her a husband, igniting jealousy and upheaval that threatens their quiet village.
On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a fisherwoman (the brilliant Olivia Colman); single and perpetually ridiculed. One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbours, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker. The weaver (Peter Dinklage) excels at his craft, creating an immensely impressive wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård) as her ideal partner. In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos. The women villagers flat out state their lustful desires for the wicker husband, and the men become self-conscious of their own inadequacies. Yet no one is as deeply perturbed as the tailor’s wife (Elizabeth Debicki), who sees the fisherwoman’s happiness and freedom as a threat to her esteem amongst the townsfolk.
