OperaGlass Works were about to open with a stage production of ‘The Turn of the Screw’ just when Lockdown began. They had been rehearsing for six weeks and the production was at such an exciting point that they just couldn’t let it go. So they made a film. This is not capture of a live performance. Shot on location at Wilton’s Music Hall, the extraordinary atmosphere of this mid-nineteenth-century theatre suits the haunting ambiguities of this opera perfectly. The whole space, every corner, is used to tell the story. This is a new way to film opera: the presence of the camera is declared, the intimacy of performing to a live audience is replaced by the singers singing directly into the lens. Starring Robert Murray (Quint and Prologue), Rhian Lois (Governess), Leo Jemison (Miles), Alys Mererid Roberts (Flora), Gweneth Ann Rand (Mrs. Grose), Francesca Chiejina (Miss Jessel). Sinfonia of London is conducted by John Wilson. Directed by Dominic Best and Selina Cadell and Eliza Thompson.
