The race-against-the-clock jeopardy of the 2023 efforts to rescue eight passengers trapped in a cable car high in the Himalayas.
Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s gripping, heart-in-the-mouth docudrama
has all the urgency of a Hollywood disaster movie from the 1970s, but also of comments on the neglect of poor rural communities in Pakistan. The establishing scenes of mountain peaks, lush vegetation and blue skies belie the lack of infrastructure and proper roads. Travel is routinely by rusty, cramped cable cars and it was on August 22nd, 2023, when a cable snapped, leaving a group of eight travellers aged between 13 and on their daily commute, hanging by a wire, suspended 900 feet above the ground for 10 hours. An alliance of rescuers must improvise under intense public scrutiny, racing against an invisible clock before disaster strikes live on television. (Some subtitles)
