In one of the most famous of all prison-set films, a laid-back Southern man is sentenced to two years in a rural prison but refuses to conform.
When petty criminal Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is sent to a Florida prison farm, he doesn't play by the rules of either the sadistic warden (Strother Martin) or the yard's resident heavy, Dragline (George Kennedy – winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this role), who ends up admiring the new guy's unbreakable will. Luke's bravado, even in the face of repeated stints in the prison's dreaded solitary confinement cell, "the box”, make him a rebel hero to his fellow convicts and a thorn in the side of the prison officers. ‘Cool Hand Luke’ is eminently rewatchable, due in equal parts to its visual beauty on the screen, the stellar script and one of Paul Newman's most indelible performances - his piercing blue eyes and easy smile definitely help as well.
