This talk, by Professor Emeritus of Cultural History Maggie Andrews, explores prison films, which have enthralled audiences and shaped attitudes towards the penal system since the silent era. Examination of a diverse range of films including ‘La Grande Illusion’ (1937), ‘Yield to the Night’ (1956), ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ (1994) and ‘Greenfingers’ (2000) will suggest prison films tap into people’s desire for self-determination and fear of authority, whilst being grounded in the cultures from which they emerge.
