Over six full decades, Andrzej Wajda amassed one of the largest and most impressively wide-ranging bodies of work of any European filmmaker. He charted the fate of his native Poland at pivotal historical junctures, be they the Napoleonic Wars, Poland’s turbocharged industrial revolution, the Katyń massacre, the fate of Poland’s Jews, the Warsaw Uprising, and life under Communism, all dramatised via unforgettably muscular images that drew extensively upon his early training as a painter. This heavily illustrated talk by longstanding Sight & Sound contributor Michael Brooke ranges over Wajda’s entire film career.
