CRAFTING THE CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE OF BRITISH CINEMA
This talk, illustrated by a range of clips, will celebrate what is becoming a golden age for British women film directors.
Lynne Ramsay’s visually poetic filmmaking style is imbued with a dream-like surrealism, expressed through her films like ‘Ratcatcher’ (1999) and ‘Die My Love’ (2025). Andrea Arnold captures the psychological states of her characters in ‘Fish Tank’ (2009) and ‘American Honey’ (2016) through intimate cinematography that expresses character experiences through a focus on the body. Freelance researcher and writer on film Jade Evans will explore how Ramsay and Arnold, as well as the films of their contemporaries, including Carol Morley and Clio Barnard, have crafted distinctive filmmaking styles that capture the psychological states of their characters.
