Robert Redford, who died last year, was an extraordinary presence on the big screen for decades, much loved for his acting skills, his choice of films and, let’s face it, his looks. But the greater part of his legacy could lie behind the camera, as director but also as facilitator of independent filmmakers with his Sundance Institute. In this talk, Sandy Guthrie, of the Cinema Education Team, will consider the mark Redford has left on the film industry. We will consider how ‘The Way We Were’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’ sit alongside ‘Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid’ and ‘The Sting’, while overtly political movies of the calibre of ‘Three Days of the Condor’ and ‘All the President’s Men’ might contrast with ‘Out of Africa’ or ‘The Old Man & the Gun’.
