A young man struggles to get by in prison until he is taken under the wing of a powerful mob boss, but his gradual rise through the organization's ranks brings him in conflict with his mentor.
This acclaimed crime drama follows Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim in his breakout performance), a delinquent young Muslim man, who is struggling to get by in a French prison. When he is taken under the wing of powerful Corsican mob boss Cesar Luciani (Niels Arestrup), he begins performing regular assignments for him, proving himself invaluable to the imposing criminal. As Malik rises in the mob ranks, he gains more power, but also more enemies, a situation that eventually brings conflict with his mentor. ‘Un Prophète’ was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, won the BAFTA in that same category, and was awarded a staggering nine César Awards (French Film Academy) out of 13 nominations at the 2010 ceremony.
