In this Ian McEwan adaptation, two strangers become connected by a tragedy, yet one dangerously feels that the connection goes much deeper than the other is willing to admit.
A couple, Joe (Daniel Craig) and Claire (Samantha Morton), are on an idyllic picnic when they witness a hot air balloon in trouble. They try to help alongside fellow rescuer Jed (Rhys Ifans), but the repercussions leave Joe deeply traumatized and guilt-ridden. Following the event, Jed develops a dangerous, delusional obsession with Joe, challenging Joe's sanity, guilt and his relationship with Claire. This is a psychological thriller with great performances by the leading trio (especially Ifans), it is intelligent and gripping and balances two related themes with insight: the guilt in the aftermath of tragedy and the challenges of a relationship that moves from unwanted to ominous.
