The Films of Michael Haneke

To accompany a season of restored versions of his films, this talk looks back at the Austrian auteur’s career.

Michael Haneke’s 2012 film ‘Amour’ won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and a BAFTA and is generally considered to be one of the greatest of all films about love, ageing and death. Following masterpieces including ‘The Piano Teacher’, ‘Hidden’ and ‘The White Ribbon’, it established him as one of the most revered directors of the 21st Century, in the European art house tradition of Bergman and Bresson. However, his work defies genre categorisation and some audiences have found his work baffling and disturbing. In this talk, illustrated by a range of clips and accompanied by a short season of his films, Cinema Education Officer Patrick Hargood will explore the underlying themes of Haneke’s films and celebrate their artistry, showing why some of the finest actors of the last fifty years – Binoche, Huppert, Trintignant, Auteuil – have seized any opportunity to work with him.
