The Good, The Bad and the Green (PG)

The Good, The Bad and the Green

A talk reflecting on the impact on the environment of filmmaking.

From epic quests like Scott’s Antarctic expedition and the earliest attempts to conquer Everest, filmmakers have tracked the triumphs and disasters of man’s interactions with the natural world.

The great outdoors has always proved a natural theatre for the movies, with many films posing profound questions about our relationship with animals, eco systems and one another.  More recently, the rise of the Green movement has prompted a surge of film addressing environmental issues across a variety of genres, from documentary to sci-fi and romance. In this talk, Nick Johnston-Jones of the Education Team considers the impact of film making on the environment for both good and bad, from the earliest days of silent cinema to the modern age, looking at some of the unintended consequences of such movies as well as celebrating their enduring power to delight and inspire audiences, remind us of our place in the natural order and alert us to danger.
