The Alto Knights (15)

The Alto Knights

Robert de Niro plays a pair of Italian Americans who run two separate crime families in the mid-20th century.

The film follows two of New York's most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, as they vie for control of the city's streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever. For the actor, stepping into the shoes of both mafiosos – each with their own unique way of running things – was a compelling challenge. “The idea of playing the two different characters was intriguing to me,” De Niro says. “They’re like two different sides of the same coin. One is more rational, more diplomatic. That’s the Costello character. The Genovese character is more erratic, more impulsive.”

All Happy Families (15)

All Happy Families

A film portraying Chicago folks with humour and authenticity, focussing on the Landry family who gather to renovate their family home.

What starts out as a benign family get-together ends up spiralling out of control as some shocking news threatens to tear everything apart. Graham (Josh Radnor) has reconnected with his college crush, Dana (Chandra Russell). Sue (Becky Ann Baker) is questioning the next chapter in her life, including her marriage to complacent Roy (John Ashton). Then, Will (Rob Huebel), the television star blows in. The title is inspired by the famous first line of Anna Karenina, which states that all happy families are alike, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. The cast of talented actors are terrific. They all slip comfortably into their roles, getting their moments to shine.

Mickey 17

Mickey 17, known as an "expendable," goes on a dangerous journey to colonize an ice planet.

Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) is an “expendable,” a disposable worker sent to colonize an icy, hostile planet. When he defies expectations and survives a deadly mission, Mickey becomes caught in a conflict with his replacement, Mickey 18, forcing him to question his identity, purpose, and the ethics of human life in a future driven by exploitation and cloning. Featuring standout performances from Pattinson, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, Bong Joon Ho’s direction infuses the film with emotional depth and visual splendour. Clever, suspenseful and deeply human, this is a sci-fi spectacle with a soul.
