Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. (12A)

Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.

When a pacifist is called to a political act that could change the course of history, a man of honour responds. This is the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a man who preached love while plotting the assassination of an evil tyrant.

As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Jonas Dassler) is swept into the epicentre of a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler. With his faith and fate at stake, Bonhoeffer must choose between upholding his moral convictions or risking it all to save millions of Jews from genocide. Will his shift from preaching peace to plotting murder alter the course of history or cost him everything?

The Alto Knights (15)

The Alto Knights

Robert de Niro plays a pair of Italian Americans who run two separate crime families in the mid-20th century.

The film follows two of New York's most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, as they vie for control of the city's streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever. For the actor, stepping into the shoes of both mafiosos – each with their own unique way of running things – was a compelling challenge. “The idea of playing the two different characters was intriguing to me,” De Niro says. “They’re like two different sides of the same coin. One is more rational, more diplomatic. That’s the Costello character. The Genovese character is more erratic, more impulsive.”

When he defies expectations and survives a deadly mission, Mickey becomes caught in a conflict with his replacement, Mickey 18, forcing him to question his identity, purpose, and the ethics of human life in a future driven by exploitation and cloning. Featuring standout performances from Pattinson, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, Bong Joon Ho’s direction infuses the film with emotional depth and visual splendour. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (15)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Winner of five Oscars, including Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress. A true classic which must be seen by all lovers of quality film.

1963. When Korean War veteran Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) gets transferred for evaluation from a prison to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the tyrannical Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward's patients. This nearly flawless film makes us question our judgments on who is mad and who is sane.
