Kinds of Kindness (18)

Kinds of Kindness

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone team up for a third time (‘The Favourite’, ‘Poor Things’) in this triptych fable which features the usual brave filmmaking mixed with dark comedy. A film where the director once again puts up a mirror to our flawed society and shows us the worst, and also the best, that humanity has to offer.

A man seeks to break free from his predetermined path and tries to take control of his own life; a policeman is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader. There is always a clamouring of A-listers to get into a Lanthimos film, and this one has a few regulars (Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley) and a couple of newcomers (a brilliant Jesse Plemmons, Hong Chau). For those of you who discovered Lanthimos with ‘The Favourite’ or ‘Poor Things’, get ready to meet the original ‘Dogtooth’ version - unfiltered, uncut, old-school Yorgos. One of the highlights at the recent 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

The Present (PG)

The Present

When a young boy discovers he can use an enchanted grandfather clock to go back in time, he teams up with his siblings on a quest to bring their separated parents back together again.

Taylor (Easton Rocket Sweda), one of three siblings in a suburban American family, discovers that he can make time run backwards, going as far as 12 hours into the past. All he must do is physically move the hands of an heirloom upright clock. This proves useful because his parents – mum Jen (Isla Fisher) and dad Eric (Greg Kinnear) – are on a path towards separation, which they hope to announce at a family dinner that evening. So Taylor, who is electively mute, brings out his best ‘Groundhog Day’ tactics, and keeps rewinding time each time tweaking the parents’ day. This is a fun family film that could be enjoyed by all and includes a scene-stealing performance by Arturo Castro as a highly unprofessional therapist.

Orlando, My Political Biography (12A)

Orlando, My Political Biography

Orlando, Ma Biographie Politique

Academic virtuoso turned filmmaker Paul B. Preciado's Berlin Film Festival award-winning documentary tells his and others' stories of transition through unique reenactments and visual interpretations of Virginia Woolf's ‘Orlando: A Biography’.

"Come, come! I'm sick to death of this particular self. I want another." Taking Virginia Woolf's novel ‘Orlando: A Biography’ as its starting point, Preciado has fashioned this documentary as a personal essay, historical analysis, and social manifesto which premiered and took home four prizes at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. For almost a century, Woolf's eponymous hero/heroine has inspired readers for their gender fluidity across physical and spiritual metamorphoses over a 300-year lifetime. Not content to simply update a seminal work, Preciado interrogates the relevance of Orlando in the continuing struggle against anti-trans ideologies and in the fight for global trans rights. Fancy Dance (15)

Fancy Dance

Following her sister's disappearance, a Native American hustler kidnaps her niece from the child's white grandparents and sets out for the state powwow in hopes of keeping what is left of their family intact.

Since her sister's disappearance, Jax (Lily Gladstone from ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki's grandfather, Frank (Shea Whigham), the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki's mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system. This is both a shrewd familial drama and a slow-burning road film with the cinematic taste of a crime-thriller. Gladstone gives a tremendous performance.
