Ordinary People (15)

Ordinary People

Remembering Donald Sutherland:

The accidental death of the older son of an affluent family deeply strains the relationships among the bitter mother, the good-natured father and the guilt-ridden younger son.

Tormented by guilt following the death of his older brother, Buck, in a sailing accident, alienated teenager Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton) attempts suicide. Returning home following an extended stay in a psychiatric hospital, Conrad tries to deal with his mental anguish and also reconnect with his mother, Beth (Mary Tyler Moore), who has grown cold and angry, and his emotionally wounded father, Calvin (Donald Sutherland), with the help of his psychiatrist, Dr. Berger (Judd Hirsch).

Rose (12A)

Rose

Two sisters have their relationship challenged on an anticipated coach trip to Paris. Based on the true story of the director’s own two sisters, this is a heartwarming movie about love and devotion.

Inger (Sofie Gråbøl) and Ellen (Lene Maria Christensen) are on a trip to Paris. When Inger announces her struggles with mental health to the group, the sisters are faced with pity from some and discrimination from others. On arrival in Paris, it soon becomes clear that Inger has a hidden agenda concerning a figure from her past, ultimately involving the entire group in her hunt for answers. This is a film about love and care for each other, in spite of our differences, as much as it is a film about not judging a book by its cover. The trip itself brings out many sides of Inger, and director Arden Oplev does a wonderful job ensuring Inger's humanity stays in the spotlight whether through drama or comedy. Because, despite the pitfalls of the subject matter, this is a very funny movie. (Subtitles)

The G (15)

The G

A mysterious older woman seeks revenge on the corrupt legal guardian who destroyed her life.

Ann Hunter (aka "The G", played by Dale Dickey) and her husband retired to an unnamed American suburb 10 years ago. But one day out of the blue they are snatched from their home by a corrupt legal guardian who believes they have hidden wealth. Their home and assets are legally stripped from them and they are put in a prison-like "eldercare facility". Trapped in a corrupt and terrifying system, The G begins to show her true mettle as she and her loyal granddaughter fight to get them out... and get revenge on the people who did this. “I’m not a good person”, she says “But I do have other qualities.” This turns out to be something of an understatement. Dickey is remarkable in this very smart and not run-of-the-mill revenge thriller.

Kinds of Kindness (18)

Kinds of Kindness

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone team up for a third time (‘The Favourite’, ‘Poor Things’) in this triptych fable which features the usual brave filmmaking mixed with dark comedy. A film where the director once again puts up a mirror to our flawed society and shows us the worst, and also the best, that humanity has to offer.

A man seeks to break free from his predetermined path and tries to take control of his own life; a policeman is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader. There is always a clamouring of A-listers to get into a Lanthimos film, and this one has a few regulars (Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley) and a couple of newcomers (a brilliant Jesse Plemmons, Hong Chau). For those of you who discovered Lanthimos with ‘The Favourite’ or ‘Poor Things’, get ready to meet the original ‘Dogtooth’ version - unfiltered, uncut, old-school Yorgos. One of the highlights at the recent 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
