The Trouble with Jessica (15)

The Trouble with Jessica

Sarah and Tom, a successful London professional couple, panic after their friend Jessica kills herself in their garden just as they are on the brink of selling the house for some urgently-needed cash.

Their situation takes a terrifying nosedive with the sudden death of their uninvited guest, Jessica (Indira Varma). Panicking that the buyer will pull out of the sale if they find out what happened, Sarah (Shirley Henderson) and Tom (Alan Tudyk) persuade their best friends, Richard (Rufus Sewell) and Beth (Olivia Williams), to help them relocate Jessica’s body. Faced with the moral dilemma of their lives, they make a series of choices that could be either their salvation or their destruction. This is a delicious black comedy, and as the title suggests, it has echoes of Hitchcock's ‘The Trouble with Harry’. Premiered at the 2023 Chichester International Film Festival.

Mothers' Instinct (15)

Mothers' Instinct

In this Hitchcockian psychological thriller set in 1960s suburban USA, a pair of best friends and neighbours who seem to have it all, have their lives turned upside down after a life-changing accident.

Housewives Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Celine (Anne Hathaway) live a traditional lifestyle with successful husbands (Josh Charles & Anders Danielsen Lie) and sons of the same age. Life's perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond. As the story progresses from drama to suspense, the interplay between the two women becomes increasingly tense, but delicately balanced out for the viewer with the immaculate 1960’s suburbia set production.

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus (U)

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus

Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto leaves his fans with a moving send-off. All the better here with stunning cinema sound.

On 28 Mar 2023, legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away after his struggle against cancer. In the years leading up to his death, Sakamoto could no longer perform live. Single concerts, not to mention sprawling global tours, were too taxing. Despite this, in late 2022, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave the world with one final performance: a concert film, featuring just him and his piano. This film lets Sakamoto deliver an elegy, and in the process, an autobiography of his creative journey, as captured through the precision and poetry of director Neo Sora’s camera.

Naked Lunch (18)

Naked Lunch

In association with the Oxmarket Gallery’s ‘Burn Burn Burn: the Beats light up the Ox’ exhibition (2-14 Apr), and as a perfect selection for our second ‘Cult of Cinema’ presentation, we bring you David Cronenberg’s legendary take on William S. Burrough’s “unfilmable” novel.

Blank-faced bug killer Bill Lee (Peter Weller) and his dead-eyed wife, Joan (Judy Davis), like to get high on Bill's pest poisons while lounging with Beat poet pals. After meeting the devilish Dr. Benway (Roy Scheider), Bill gets a drug made from a centipede. Upon indulging, he accidentally kills Joan, takes orders from his typewriter-turned-cockroach, ends up in a constantly mutating Mediterranean city and learns that his hip friends have published his work - which he doesn't remember writing. Cronenberg's stylistically ambitious interpretation of William S. Burroughs's twisted genius may even inspire you to pick up the book. Wild cinema from even wilder source material.
