My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (12A)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

Join the Portokalos family as they travel to a family reunion in Greece for a heartwarming and hilarious trip full of love, twists and turns.

Back in 2002, Nia Vardalos’ ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’, based on her own upbringing and romantic life, went on an unprecedented box office run, climbing every week through sheer word of mouth to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy ever. The Portokalos family takes a trip to Greece for a reunion with their extended Greek family - the final wish of patriarch Gus, who has passed away. (The real-life actor who played Gus, Michael Constantine, passed in 2021). While Toula and Ian search for Gus' childhood friends, love blossoms between Aristotle and Paris (which is an unwelcome development to Paris, who had ghosted Aristotle before the trip), and Aunt Voula continues to be Aunt Voula, the most hilarious member of the Portokalos family.

Past Lives (12A)

Past Lives

Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are separated after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny.

The film follows two people who might be soulmates, even though they have never kissed and haven’t been in the same city for two decades. Writer-director Celine Song modulates perfectly the delicate tonal balance of this wise, wistful film, dividing her narrative into three distinct segments and following the characters when they’re roughly 12, 24 and 36 years old. There are three superb performances at the picture’s centre, but none is more radiant than that of Greta Lee, gracefully capturing the spirit of a searching soul who seems to understand things about the nuances of love that are beyond the grasp of the rest of us. ‘Past Lives’ is a film about time, missed opportunities and enduring connections, and with an outstanding critics’ score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Innocent (15)

The Innocent

L'Innocent

When Abel learns that his mother is about to marry a man in prison, he freaks out. With the help of his best friend, he will do whatever it takes to protect her.

Doubting that convicted burglar Michel (Roschdy Zem) is capable of turning over a new leaf, Abel's protective streak kicks in, and so with the help of his best friend Clémence (a sensational Noémie Merlant), he begins tailing his new stepfather's movements. Their amateur sleuthing is quickly uncovered by Michel and triggers an unlikely - and bold - business proposition for them both. Few caper comedies have this much heart, and few romantic dramas offer such an appealingly nutty plot. Keeps you off-kilter, and its escalating antics always entertain. (Subtitles)

Strange Way of Life (15)

Strange Way of Life

We are delighted to be one of the selected cinemas in the country to bring you Pedro Almodóvar’s short film ‘Strange Way of Life’ as a one-night-only special event.

After twenty-five years Silva (Pedro Pascal) rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake (Ethan Hawke). They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their friendship. It is the first time the two men have laid eyes (and much else) on each other for 25 years. After dinner together, during which Jake abandons his teetotalism and drinks wine, the two men’s feelings for each other become too intense to resist. The next morning, Silva asks to borrow a pair of Jake’s underpants. Almodóvar’s lovingly protracted shot of Jake’s pristine underwear drawer is an amusing fetish. This special one-night-only event will include the film (31m), alongside a pre-recorded Q&A (51m) with Pedro Almodóvar, exclusive to cinemas.

Mob Land

A sheriff tries to keep the peace when a desperate family man violently robs a pill mill with his brother-in-law, alerting an enforcer for the New Orleans mafia.

Deep in the heart of Dixie, in a small town struggling with the ravages of addiction, a local sheriff (John Travolta) tries to maintain the peace when desperate family man Shelby (Shiloh Fernandez) robs a pill mill with his reckless brother-in-law, Trey (Kevin Dillon). But the supposedly easy score takes a violent turn, alerting the New Orleans mafia's revenge-seeking enforcer (Stephen Dorff), who threatens Shelby's wife (Ashley Benson) and daughter. The Nettle Dress (12A)

The Nettle Dress

Textile artist Allan Brown spends seven years making a dress by hand from foraged stinging nettles, all picked on the South Downs near Brighton.

Beautifully filmed by award-winning documentary maker Dylan Howitt, ‘The Nettle Dress’ follows Allan along the whole seven-year journey. This is 'hedgerow couture', the greenest of slow fashion. It's also his medicine, the way he survives the death of his wife, that left him and his four children bereft. The challenge of making near zero carbon clothing sourced within a few miles of his home means re-learning ancient crafts and recalls Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale ‘Wild Swans'. From early experiments making nettle thread, through foraging, processing, spinning, weaving and cutting the cloth. Finally, a vision of the dress back in the woods where the nettles were picked, worn by one of his daughters.

Jesus Revolution (12A)

Jesus Revolution

The true story of a national spiritual awakening in the early 1970s and its origins within a community of teenage hippies in Southern California.

In the 1970s, young Greg Laurie is searching for all the right things in all the wrong places until he meets Lonnie, A charismatic hippie-street-preacher. Together with Pastor Chuck (Kelsey Grammar), they open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to a Jesus Revolution that changed the world. One of the most appealing faith-based big-screen entertainments in a while, polished and persuasive without getting too preachy. The film is inspirational and beautiful when Pastor Chuck opens his church to those in need of guidance. Jonathan Roumie is charismatic as the hippie preacher. A surprise hit from the summer season.

Haunted Mansion

A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest and a historian to help exorcise her newly bought mansion after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts.

Directed by Justin Simien, the film features an all-star ensemble cast including LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon and Dan Levy, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost. Like the Disney theme-park attraction upon which it’s based, at its best it’s entertaining in a quaint, late-’60s way, which makes it a pleasant summer surprise. The first of four horror films in this Autumn Season, although this one is definitely on the light-hearted side.

Tokyo Story (U)

Tokyo Story

Tokyo Story is a Yasujirô Ozu masterpiece whose rewarding complexity has lost none of its power more than half a century on.

The elderly Shukishi (Chishu Ryu) and his wife, Tomi (Chieko Higashiyama), take the long journey from their small seaside village to visit their adult children in Tokyo. Their elder son, Koichi (Sô Yamamura), a doctor, and their daughter, Shige (Haruko Sugimura), a hairdresser, don't have much time to spend with their aged parents, and so it falls to Noriko (Setsuko Hara), the widow of their younger son who was killed in the war, to keep her in-laws company. Ozu only has to train his camera on a face to uncover a sense of resignation, or longing, or loneliness, and the mood, if you allow it, becomes quite overwhelming. (Subtitles)

His fierce new trainer, Sabrina, suggests he develop an exótico character - an unmasked, stereotypically effeminate role audiences love to hate. But exóticos never get to win. Klokkenluider (15)

Klokkenluider

Ewan, a government whistleblower, and Silke, his forthright Flemish wife are sent to a remote country house in west Belgium. Joined by two close protection officers, they await the arrival of a British journalist.

From its early scenes of bickering, awkwardness and rising tension, through to its shockingly violent ending, this elegantly constructed, endlessly intriguing black comedy shares the combined DNA of 1970s US conspiracy thrillers, British kitchen-sink dramas and Pinteresque stage comedies. A confined story of mismatched people thrown together in a rural hideout. But it is the bold play of diverse influences, pitch-black gallows humour, sharply amusing dialogue and stark, perceptive characterisation that singles out director Maskell as a singular talent behind the camera. Mightily impressive and dripping with dark humour, this is a short and glorious little British film.

A Haunting in Venice (12A)

A Haunting in Venice

In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a séance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer.

Kenneth Branagh returns with his stunning portrayal of detective Hercule Poirot in the newest Agatha Christie adaptation, ‘A Haunting in Venice,’ based on her novel ‘Hallowe'en Party’. For the third time, Branagh will be directing and starring. Agatha Christie remains the best-selling fiction author of all time and the queen of whodunits. This time her Belgian protagonist is retired and living a secluded life in Venice, when he is invited to a séance and begrudgingly attends. When a guest is murdered at the haunted palazzo where the séance is held, Poirot must come out of retirement and put his hung-up detective skills back to work. In doing so, he uncovers a hidden world of secrets and awakens the ghosts of a forgotten past.

Enter the Dragon (15)

Enter the Dragon

In this ballet of pain and mutilation, Bruce Lee is a matchless Nureyev. The others are just athletes - he made karate a film art.

Bruce Lee plays a martial-arts expert determined to help capture the narcotics dealer whose gang was responsible for the death of his sister. Lee enters a kung fu competition in an attempt to fight his way to the dealer's headquarters with the help of some friends. While the West had seen a very clichéd version of Asian characters on screen in the 70s, ‘Enter the Dragon’ broke many conventions from the diversity of the characters to how action is handled in the movie. The movie’s success contributed to mainstream interest in forms of martial arts and also inspired numerous action films, television shows, games, comic books, manga and animé, which are pretty popular today.

Cobweb (15)

Cobweb

Things go bump in the night in this derivative, pulpy and very very scary ‘monster in the basement’ movie.

Eight-year-old Peter is plagued by a mysterious, constant tap, tap from inside his bedroom wall – a tapping that his parents insist is all in his imagination. As Peter’s fear intensifies, he believes that his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) could be hiding a terrible, dangerous secret and questions their trust. And for a child, what could be more frightening than that? The film benefits from strong performances and a haunting atmospheric tone. Chris Thomas Devlin’s script has enough sick, witty ideas to make the fearsome goings-on seem fresh and immediate. The second of four horror films this season that make up the Chichester Cinema Creepy Carnival that leads up to Halloween.

The Old Oak (15)

The Old Oak

A northern pub landlord confronts locals’ hostility towards Syrian immigrants in Loach’s latest – and possibly last – piece of politically trenchant cinema.

The Old Oak is the name of his pub, the one community meeting place in a deprived north-eastern former mining town – and it is in dire need of refurbishment. His regulars are seething with rage, livid at the collapse in house prices and brooding over YouTube videos about immigrants. Then a busload of terrified Syrians arrives and the tension gets worse. Rather than show you what solidarity looks like, Loach lets you in on what it feels like. The result is one of his most moving films, a presentation of the world not as Loach thinks it should be, but as it might and can become.

Bolan's Shoes (15)

Bolan's Shoes

It captures the heady exhilaration of glam rock mania through the experiences of a group of over-excited kids from a local children's home before a devastating road accident changes their lives for ever. Years later, and still clinging to the adoration of her childhood idol, survivor Penny takes best friend and fellow Marc Bolan fan to visit his shrine in London but a chance encounter there catapults her back to the horror she had tried so hard to forget. Bolan's Shoes is a joyful celebration of Seventies culture and brims with the energy of that vibrant era. Look out for the Marc Bolan/T. Rex documentary ‘Angelheaded Hipster’ also screening this season from 6 Oct.

Black Narcissus (U)

Black Narcissus

A group of Anglican nuns, led by Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr), are sent to a mountain in the Himalayas. The climate in the region is hostile and the nuns are housed in an odd old palace. They work to establish a school and a hospital, but slowly their focus shifts. Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron) falls for a government worker, Mr Dean (David Farrar), and begins to question her vow of celibacy. As Sister Ruth obsesses over Mr Dean, Sister Clodagh becomes immersed in her own memories of love. It is a landmark film with bold colours and enormous landscapes, about tension and eroticism boiling beneath the façades.

Passages (18)

Passages

Franz Rogowski plays self-obsessed film director Tomas, married to artist Martin (Ben Whishaw), but forever curious for more. That more arrives in the shape of Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a teacher he meets at a bar before finding himself in her bedroom. He’s brazenly proud when recounting the tale back at home but when lust turns to love, or at least his concept of it, whatever conflicted openness Martin might have previously had soon curdles into distaste. Its sophisticated approach to romance (or, perhaps, the absence of it) is not too cool or alienating, because Sachs and his sterling cast give the film such textured, specific life. N.B. This is an 18-certificate film containing graphic sex scenes.
