As our traditional music-themed closer for our Open Air Screenings weekend, we present this family-friendly film which is a fitting tribute to one of the most beloved singer-songwriters in modern music history – Neil Diamond. ‘Sweet Caroline’ sing-along anyone?
Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Mike (Hugh Jackman) is a middle-aged mechanic and Claire (Kate Hudson) is a hairdresser. These troubled souls are drawn to each other as much as they are to their shared love of the venerable singer-songwriter, Neil Diamond. Together, they become the tribute act ‘Lightning and Thunder’, experiencing soaring success and devastating heartbreak in their musical journey together. The best Neil Diamond songs are catchy enough to unite huge crowds, they’re deeply sentimental, and they refuse to make even the slightest effort to be cool… just like this film. The film’s musical sequences are superb, with Hudson especially shining. ‘Song Sung Blue’ shows us that everyone has a voice worth using and the world is a better place when we all sing along.
